Fellowship Program
Andrews–Paulos Research & Education Institute: Fellowship Program
The Andrews–Paulos Sports Medicine Fellowship Program is an ACGME accredited postgraduate sports medicine fellowship. The fellowship program falls under the direction of AOSSM President and APREI President Dr. James Andrews and APREI Vice President and Sports Medicine Fellowship Director Dr. Lonnie Paulos. Combined, these two physicians have trained more than a over 362 graduates, the majority of whom have entered private practice and developed sports-based practices across the U.S.A. and several other countries.
The fellowship is an extremely active clinical fellowship with a balanced exposure to open and closed surgical treatment of the knee, foot/ankle, shoulder, hip, and wrist/elbow. During the 2008-09 academic year, two sports medicine fellows performed over 1470 surgical procedures.
The fellowship is also balanced between the OR and the office setting. One of the highlights for our fellows has been the opportunity to gain considerable experience in the office. Currently, the fellows work with eight orthopedic surgery attendings and one primary care sports medicine attending in the Andrews Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine practice. One of the strengths of our program is the training the fellows receive by working with our group of diversely-trained faculty. Our out-patient surgery center is adjacent to the physician(s) medical office(s) making for even more convenience during training.
Research is a mandatory requirement of the fellowship. At least one published paper is considered the minimum expectation of our fellows. However, we have had fellows achieve greater than 10 publications during their fellowship. Generally, the fellows have one day per week for research, although there is ample time throughout the week for additional reading and research.
About the Selection Process
Our fellows are selected for the fellowship through the Sports Medicine Match sponsored by the AOSSM, administered by the San Francisco Match. The academic year is August 1st through July 31st, thus allowing time for the fellow to prepare for written board examinations, move and get acclimated to Gulf Breeze. The fellow’s salary is commensurate with a PGY-6 level. Medical and disability insurance is provided. Housing is not provided.
Applicants may visit the AOSSM website for up-to-date information and application instructions.
About our Fellowship Directors
Dr. Andrews serves as Co-Medical Director for Intercollegiate Sports at Auburn University and Senior Orthopaedic Consultant for Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Alabama; thus allowing ample time for fellows to experience SEC football team coverage during the season.
Dr. Paulos serves as Adjunct Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of South Alabama and Research Associate at University of West Florida.
